A West Island man working as a janitor in a building in Dorval, despite being under a court order forbidding him from being in the presence of minors, has been denied bail in a case where he is charged with sexually assaulting a young girl.

Richard Farrow, 52, of Dorval, appeared before Quebec Court Judge Marie Josée Di Lallo on Monday at the Montreal courthouse where she denied his release while he is charged with sexual touching, indecent exposure and sexually assaulting the girl who is under age 10.

Farrow, who was arrested by the Montreal police on Friday, is also charged with failing to comply with a probation order under which he was not supposed “be in the presence of minors except in the company of other responsible adults who are aware” of his past conviction.

On Sept. 28, 2010, Farrow was sentenced to a six-month prison term and two years of probation after he pleaded guilty to invitation to sexual touching in another case involving a minor. Three charges filed in the same case, alleging he had sexually assaulted the victim and committed a break-in, were stayed after he entered the guilty plea.

According to a source familiar with the investigation, Farrow was working as a janitor in the building where he allegedly attacked the girl in the current case. The apartment building is located in Dorval near the border it shares with Lachine and is near a private school for girls. A spokesperson for the Montreal police said they could not confirm whether Farrow was employed by the building when he was arrested and The Gazette was not able to contact the person listed as its owner on Monday.

According to provincial court records, in 1996, when Farrow resided in Île Perrot, he was also convicted of sexually assaulting and exposing his genitals to a minor. In that case he was sentenced to a 30-day prison term and 3 years of probation.

His current case returns to court on Aug. 27.
