MONTREALA - A 72-year-old man who admitted to committing sexual offences on a 3-year-old girl while he recorded the activity with a camera has been sentenced to 66 months in prison.
As Quebec Court Judge Céline Lamontagne sentenced Gabriel Cantin, she noted his lack of empathy for the victim.
Cantin, who has been in custody, has 55 months left to serve.
The Anjou resident's face registered no noticeable reaction as he listened to Lamontagne.
The victim's father, who has had a difficult time at each court date, appeared disappointed in the sentence.
Crown prosecutor Rachelle Pitre had sought an eight-year sentence because, she repeated on Friday, Cantin still doesn't admit he is a pedophile or that he has a problem.
The defence had asked for a four-year sentence.
The case against Cantin began late last year when Montreal police searched his home, which is across the street from an elementary school, and found what they called one of the largest collections of child pornography they have ever seized.
While examining what they captured, an investigator found a video of what turned out to be Cantin molesting the girl while he changed her diaper.
Pitre said later she wasn't satisfied with the sentence, and she will read it over carefully before considering a request for an appeal.
Lamontagne described Cantin's crimes as serious but noted that other factors played into her decision, including his age and the fact it was his first conviction.
