A 30-year-old man was sentenced to almost four more years behind bars Wednesday for having graphic pornography involving children as young as babies and molesting a sleeping eight-year-old he used to make his own depraved images.

Tyler Hussey pleaded guilty last month to accessing and making child pornography and to two counts of sexual interference with the little girl.

"Children need to be protected," Judge Lise Maisonneuve said. "The very notion that Mr. Hussey chose to take the pictures of this child would be repulsive to any member of society."

Making it even worse was that Hussey "chose to abuse the trust that was placed in him by touching (the girl) for a sexual purpose and taking the photos," the judge said.

She agreed that society would be protected if Hussey - who says he was molested by a trusted adult from age four to 10 - gets the sex offender treatment he "desperately wants" but rejected his bid for less than two years in jail so he could go to a special provincial facility.

Only significant prison time can send a message denouncing what he's done and deter others who might be tempted to abuse and degrade kids, Maisonneuve said.

Hussey - who was downloading child pornography even as police, tipped off by a roommate, arrived to arrest him in March - was found with 10,000 images and 1,000 movies of child pornography.

They involve children, from babies to adolescents, boys and girls, being sexually assaulted by adults, including images of bondage and hard-core penetration, Maisonneuve said.

Some had "hurt me" and "lick me" written on their small bodies.

Of more than 1,000 images of the little girl, were 427 considered child pornography, including images of her changing in and out of a bathing suit or naked. In some, Hussey's hand is in the frame pushing aside the sleeping girl's panties or touching her genitals.

The child expressed her feelings to the court by drawing a sad face with a teardrop.

Hussey stole her innocence, her mother said in a statement to the court. She's "no longer seeing monsters in story books, now she knows they are real."

A psychiatrist said testing was inconclusive but the porn collection and Hussey's own reports strongly suggest he's a pedophile although he's at low to moderate risk of reoffending if he takes treatment and follows doctors' recommendations.
