A man who made a sex video of himself and an underage teenage girl was sentenced Monday to three years in prison.

Thomas Doyon was 24 when he met the 15-year-old girl at the Elmira Maple Syrup Festival two years ago, Kitchener’s Ontario court heard earlier. She soon moved in to his Church Street home in Elmira, which was a popular place for youth.

She reluctantly consented to a sexual relationship with Doyon, Justice Michael Epstein noted. She also disliked him making the sex video using a webcam on his computer.

People walked in and out while it was being made and she found it embarrassing, court heard earlier.

Doyon pleaded guilty earlier to making and possessing child pornography, as well as sexually touching the girl in the spring of 2010. He also pleaded guilty to breaking into a business in January, 2010.

Doyon said he thought the legal age of consent was 14. He was arrested after he told the girl to leave because he was being evicted.

She returned home to her mother who contacted police after learning what had gone on.

“It appears to me she was a young woman who was easily led,’’ the judge said. “She had little self-esteem and little ability to deny him’’ what he wanted.

Police found 11 movies on Doyon’s computer containing child pornography. Some featured sexual activity between three and four-year-old children and adult men.

The judge noted Doyon has a “very bad record’’ involving some similar offences.

His childhood was “chaotic and fraught with deprivation,’’ Epstein said. Between the ages of four to 18, he lived in 30 to 35 foster homes.

He was diagnosed with a learning disability at an early age and is in the low-average range of cognitive functioning. He didn’t last in special education programs set up for him because of behavioural issues.

A probation officer noted in a report that he lacks understanding of sexual boundaries and has a disrespectful attitude toward females. Counselling attempts haven’t helped.

“The offences here are disturbing and are serious,’’ the judge said.

“The community expects this man would have ... had the common sense and decency not to involve a 15-year-old girl in this type of conduct.’’

Doyon was on the lam for a year after he was arrested for the break-in and failed to show up in court. He didn’t come to police attention again until July 2011.

He is prohibited for life from going places frequented by children 16 and under, such as parks, swimming areas and community centres.
