Less than a week after convicted sex offender Karl Crack was placed on a restrictive two-year recognizance he was back in a local courtroom seeking changes to the order.

On Wednesday, Ontario Court Justice Kristine Bignell agreed to vary two of the 16 restrictions she imposed on his freedom on Friday. Crack is now permitted to live at 74 MacFadden Dr. in Thessalon and must report to the Ontario Provincial Police detachment there every Friday.

When he was released from custody last week, he was required to reside at an address in Echo Bay and report weekly to the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service.

Penitentiary officials consider Crack, 46, a high risk to re-offend.

The Crown sought the recognizance, under a section of the Criminal Code, because of fears Crack will commit a serious personal injury offence.

Crack served five years and five months in prison for sex offences involving girls.

He was imprisoned in October 2004 after he was convicted of three counts of sexual assault, two counts of being a party to a sexual assault and one count of assault.

In March 2007, while he was still serving that prison term, he was sentenced to three years for two counts of sexual assault, involving a teenaged girl in 2003.

This sentence ran concurrent to the time he already was serving, but added a further five months to his prison term.

Crack was imprisoned for three years in 1987 for sexual assault with a weapon and five months in 1995 for sexual interference.

On Friday, Bignell imposed numerous conditions, including a curfew, no access to the Internet and no cell phones or other devices that can access the Internet.

As well, Crack can't communicate with or be in the company of anyone under the age of 16.

He must stay away from parks, community centres, pools, school yards, playgrounds, day care centres and other places frequented by people under that age.
