A 27-year-old man, convicted last year of child pornography offences, must register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.

Ontario Court Justice Kristine Bignell made the order Monday when she completed sentencing David Smeltzer for the 2010 offences.

Smeltzer pleaded guilty to making child pornography available and possession of child pornography in April 2011.

When she incarcerated Smeltzer in February, Bignell divided the jail term into two parts so he could serve the time intermittently and keep his employment.

At that time, the judge imposed 90 days for making the pornography available.

On Monday, Smeltzer returned to court and Bignell sentenced him to a further 45-day intermittent term for possessing child pornography.

Although he no longer is working, she agreed he could serve his time on weekends so he can continue to search for employment.

Smeltzer was charged Nov. 3, 2010, when police executed a search warrant at his apartment.

His activities on the Internet had caught the eye of an officer with the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service's technological crime unit who was monitoring peer-to-peer file sharing networks.

Seventy-two movies that fit the definition of child porn were located on his computer during a forensic analysis.

Thirty-three were unique, while the rest were duplicates.

While serving the sentence, Smeltzer will be on an intermittent probation order with numerous conditions designed to limit his access to the Internet, computers and other electronic devices.

Once he finishes his jail term, Smeltzer will be on probation for three years, the maximum period under the Criminal Code of Canada, with most of the same restrictions.

As well, he is prohibited from attending any park and public pool where there are people under the age of 16, as well as day care centres, playgrounds, schoolyards and community centres, for 10 years.
