A man was sentenced to 18 months in jail Tuesday for possessing and distributing child pornography.

Terrance Bodaly, 52, pleaded guilty to four charges, including possessing more than 3,000 images of child porn. Nine of the images depicted sadistic sex assault of children.

Bodaly, who appeared in Vancouver Provincial Court without any family or friends, was sentenced by Judge Conni Bagnall.

Bodaly was charged with the four counts that took place during the first two weeks of October 2009 while on bail for four earlier, similar charges, court heard.

Bagnall dropped the earlier charges, laid for crimes committed between November 2005 and February 2007, in exchange for the guilty pleas, and conditionally stayed one of the later charges.

She also credited him double time for the two months he had earlier spent in jail on the charges, leaving him with 14 months to serve. He was also ordered on probation for three years.

Bagnall also noted the psychiatric report done as part of the sentencing hearing shows Bodaly doesn’t fully comprehend the harm inflicted by possessing and distributing child porn.

“He has some insight but it is not complete,” she said.

She also noted his background includes “challenges and dysfunction,” but didn’t find a “causal link” to the porn, nor did she find his alcohol use or abuse to be mitigating factors.

A risk assessment found him to be at a high risk to access child porn in future and Bagnall noted Bodaly told police he believed the Criminal Code would be changed one day to allow child porn.
