He was called an Alberta teaching legend, but dark secrets are emerging about former teacher Ken McCaffery.

McCaffery plead guilty this month to sexually assaulting a student.

The victim’s sister says her brother was abused for 2 years in northern Alberta.

When she became aware of the abuse, she immediately called West Island College, a Calgary private school where McCaffery had been employed for some time.

But she now questions how West Island handled her complaint.

She says, after McCaffery abruptly retired, the school offered him a glowing reference.

The headmaster says she took the concerns to her superiors, and admits she's worried McCaffery may have more victims.

“We are always concerned…. Always encourage victims to come forward to tell us their stories,” says RCMP Sgt. Patricia Neely.

Experts say this case highlights a frightening reality; many abusers, like McCaffery, are highly respected.

"If there are other victims, it could take months or years for them to gain the courage to come forward,” says Calgary Communities Against Sexual Abuse’s Executive Director Danielle Aubry.
