Charles Everett Gallant

The former manager of a homeless shelter was sentenced Wednesday to three years in prison for sexual assault.

Everett Gallant, 70, was found guilty earlier this month of assaulting a former resident of Bedford MacDonald House in Charlottetown last spring.

Charlottetown provincial court Judge Nancy Orr said Gallant took advantage of a victim who was homeless, helpless and penniless.

Earlier this month, the court heard Gallant entered a bedroom where the young man was sleeping, crawled into his bed, and tried to have anal sex with him.

Gallant testified that the sex was consensual, but the judge rejected that explanation.

His DNA will be sent to a national databank, and he will be on the national sex offender registry for life

Gallant was convicted in 1999 for sexual offences against two teenage boys in Charlottetown.
