A Calgary man caught trying to lure a young girl over the Internet to have sex has been sentenced to two years less a day in jail.

Provincial court Judge Catherine Skene also placed Wendell Jason Richards, 44, on probation for three years as part of joint sentencing submission by defence lawyer Kaysi Fagan and Crown prosecutor Nadine Nesbitt on Wednesday.

Richards, who pleaded guilty on Feb. 8 to making available, distributing or transmitting child pornography, was arrested in an online sting involving a Denver, Colo., undercover officer posing as the mother of a sixyear-old girl.

The sentence came a decade after he was sentenced for trying to lure a 12-year-old girl over the Internet.

Court heard Richards was targeted after he communicated from an Internet cafe through a chat room, where people go to discuss the sexual exploitation of children.

He discussed with the female officer about becoming sexually involved with her fictitious daughter Brie and explained in detail what sexual acts he wanted to engage in with the girl. The agreed statement of facts said Richards made arrangements with the undercover officer to travel to Denver, to begin his sexual relationship with her daughter. He also showed himself on a webcam and referred to the girl as his "wife" and said he wanted to get her pregnant.

"I dream of the day Brie is preg by me. . . . I'm even thinking of her on fertility pills," Richards told the officer. When it was pointed out she would only be seven by that time, Richards responded: "It will be difficult and we'd need to be careful, but I think she can do it; protect her from injury once she gets preg."

Richards never did not show up at the Denver airport, prompting police to forward their investigation to the National Child Exploitation Co-ordination Centre in Ottawa, then to the southern Alberta Internet Child Exploitation Unit.
