Calgary girls' hockey coach Michael Shawn Bourgeois will serve a 60-day jail term on weekends for fondling a female player.

Bourgeois, 34, pleaded guilty Friday to a charge of sexual interference with a minor last Remembrance Day.

Crown prosecutor Frances Turner told court Bourgeois had taken two of his players out to dinner earlier in the evening to celebrate a new job he was going to in Nova Scotia.

After dropping one of the girl's off he molested the other, a 15-year-old, by fondling her leg and breasts and trying to kiss her, Turner said.

Bourgeois had also sent the girl inappropriate text messages the day before.

Defence counsel John James said his client, who lost his new job as a result of being charged, was remorseful for his actions.

Both James and Turner proposed provincial court Judge Sean Dunnigan sentence Bourgeois to 60 days as well as place him on probation for two years.

One of the conditions of Bourgeois' probation is that he undergo any assessment and counselling recommended by his probation officer.

Bourgeois was charged about a month after he touched the girl following a three-week investigation into his conduct.

He voluntarily stepped down from his coaching position once police became involved.

At the time police said the investigation was initiated by a complaint by the girl's parents and noted the girl was too young to consent to sexual contact with Bourgeois even if she wanted it.

"When the person is under 16 years of age, it is not consensual," said Det. Jeff Klinger.

"It's up to the adults to remove themselves from that situation."

While James said his client was remorseful for his actions, Bourgeois did not address Dunnigan or make any comments to the victim, who was in court with her parents.
