One crime rate that is not going down: child sex crimes. A recent report by Stats Canada crime report found that child porn increased 36% in one year, and all aggravated sexual assaults increased by 56%. In Ontario alone, 10,000 cases have been investigated since 2006 and more than 3,600 charges have been laid against 1,219 people for internet sex crimes. For every photo there is a victim, for every download there is a crime against a child.

Crown wants Alberta man declared dangerous offender

An Alberta Crown prosecutor is arguing that a former Calgary man should be declared a dangerous offender.

Gary Wayne Todd, 55, of Valleyview, Alberta, pleaded guilty last year to repeatedly sexually abusing an eight-year-old girl, bestiality and possessing child pornography.

The Crown was in court on Monday arguing Todd has a history of sexual abuse and meets the criteria for dangerous offender status according to psychiatric assessments.

The sexual assault occurred in Calgary, but a video showing the bestiality and the pornography were found in his home in Valleyview.

If a judge rules Todd is a dangerous offender, it means an open jail term and he would remain under the supervision of the court for the rest of his life.
